The Dangers of Diet Soda

After hearning what I have to say you might want to take a pass on the diet soda.

More than a few of my clients working toward a goal of losing weight have been rabid consumers of diet soda (and I’m not talking about a single 12 ounce serving a day here).  When asking them to consider giving up their daily carbonated fix of diet soda it often brings looks of horror and downright stubborn refusal.

“Why?” I am asked.  “It has no calories or fat, so what’s the problem?”  The problem I tell them is that while no major studies have come out and directly said that drinking diet soda is bad for you, a growing body of literature and experts (me included) are confirming that you will likely face a myriad of health concerns down the road.  Many of which are quite serious.

According to a University of North Carolina study, Americans consume 192 gallons of liquid a year, or about 2 liters a day.  Of that amount, about 53 gallons are carbonated soft drinks.  Consuming that amount should set more than one alarm bell off, and rightly so, as more and more research is suggesting that consuming those diet-carbonated beverages may be significantly harming our health.

Do You Have The Heart of The Stallion?

I have always been a fan of the Rocky movies; not because they were well acted, but because the message conveyed was usually inspiration and highly motivating.  The character of Rocky shows us how perseverance, dedication, hard work, and continually picking yourself up and moving forward no matter what life throws at you are great lessons that translate well into our everyday lives, especially in these trying times.

Each time I watch one of the Rocky movies, I seem to have a light bulb moment.  The other day I caught Rocky IV.  That is the one where Rocky’s friend Apollo Creed is killed by the Russian boxer Drago, and Rocky decides to fight the guy himself.  Rocky takes off for Russia to train and fight.

How Sweet, The Lesser of Two Evils

The U.S. is drowning in sugar.  According to the American Heart Association, U.S. adults consume, on average, 22 teaspoons of sugar a day.  For women that is close to four times the recommended intake (6 tsp. a day), and for men it is two and half times more (9 tsp. a day).  Additionally, the news that our teens our ingesting 34 teaspoons a day should be setting alarm bells off everywhere.

Unfortunately, controlling our sugar intake is not as easy as simply throwing the sugar bowl out.  The majority of our sugar consumption comes from processed foods and drinks that we devour daily, and the biggest culprit is soft drinks.  If you think you are not concerned by these findings because you use products flavored with artificial sweeteners like Splenda, aspartame or saccharine, think again.
